How Much Does a Memoir Ghostwriter Cost? An Open-Book Look at What You’re Paying For

When someone reaches out about hiring me to write their memoir, the money question inevitably comes up: “So… how much does a memoir ghostwriter cost?” I love that question, because I believe in being upfront about pricing. And nobody should have to sit through a sales pitch just to find out whether a service fits their budget. (By the way, I don’t do sales pitches.)

So here’s the open-book version. We’ll look at what a memoir ghostwriter costs, what you’re actually paying for, and what you’ll still need to budget for once your manuscript is done. (If you’re still deciding between a ghostwriter, a book coach, or an editor, start with my honest comparison of all three.)

How Much Does a Memoir Ghostwriter Cost in 2026?

For a full-length memoir from an experienced, professional ghostwriter, you can expect to invest roughly $18,000 to $45,000, and sometimes more.

Those numbers come straight from the people who do this work. In its 2026 rate chart, the Editorial Freelancers Association found that its members charge 50 cents to $1.00 per word to ghostwrite a memoir. For a 45,000-word book, that comes to roughly $22,500 to $45,000. Reedsy, a marketplace that connects authors with professional ghostwriters, puts memoirs and biographies at $18,000 to $50,000 based on its 2026 data.

My own memoir ghostwriting starts at $30,000 for a finished manuscript of 40,000 to 50,000 words, written over eight months. You’ll always find my current pricing on my services page.

What Affects the Cost of a Memoir Ghostwriter?

Four factors move the price of a memoir ghostwriter up or down.

The length of your book. Most memoirs land somewhere around 40,000 to 50,000 words. If your story needs more room than that, additional words are priced per thousand.

Your timeline. In general, I don’t like to rush books. Good books take time, and eight months gives your story the care it deserves. If you need your book sooner, a faster timeline is available for an added fee. Five months is the limit, though. Any faster and it’s hard to give your book the attention it needs.

The ghostwriter’s experience. Reedsy notes that newer ghostwriters may charge around $10,000 per project, while experienced ghostwriters charge upwards of $40,000. You’re paying for someone who knows how to shape a life into a story readers want to finish.

Your material. Here’s one that surprises people. I expect you to bring the material your book needs: journals, letters, photos, old emails, and any other records that help tell the story. I don’t spend a lot of time on outside research because you know your life’s story better than anyone. The same goes for business books. You’re the expert in your field, so you share the sources you want to cite. Of course, if I find a fun fact that I think would work well in your book, I’ll share that with you to see if you’d like to add it. When you bring your source materials, it keeps your investment focused on the writing itself.

What’s Included When You Hire a Memoir Ghostwriter?

Since I’m an open book, here’s exactly what happens during the eight months we work together.

Month 1: We start our interviews, and I build your outline. You approve it before I write a single chapter.

Months 2 through 6: I write your manuscript, and you review and approve each chapter as I go. That way, by month seven, your book is ready for an edit rather than a rescue.

Month 7: My developmental editor reviews the complete manuscript. (A fresh set of eyes always catches what I’ve missed.) Then I make the revisions and send it back to you.

Month 8: Your manuscript goes to my proofreader, and you receive your finished book.

Our interviews happen two hours at a time, generally twice a month. We stick to the outline so we cover what each chapter needs, and your interview time is the most important part you play. I can’t write your story without it!

I also sign a nondisclosure agreement, so nobody ever has to know I was involved, and your name goes on the cover. Once your final payment clears, the book and all the rights to it belong to you.

How Does a Ghostwriter Payment Plan Work?

Paying for a book all at once isn’t realistic for most people, and it shouldn’t have to be. I take a 25% deposit when you sign, and then you make monthly payments over the eight months we work together.

The last two payments line up with the editing milestones, so you pay as each phase is completed. Nothing is owed after your finished manuscript is delivered. If you’re comparing ghostwriters, ask each one how their payment schedule works. A clear schedule tells you a lot about how organized the whole project will be.

What Isn’t Included in the Cost of a Memoir Ghostwriter?

Pay close attention to this list, because these costs catch a lot of authors off guard. Ghostwriting covers the manuscript. Getting that manuscript into the world is a separate budget.

Plan for these costs on their own:

•          Cover design

•          Interior formatting

•          ISBN, publishing, and distribution

•          Launch strategy, marketing, or ads

•          Audiobook narration

I always mention this upfront, so you can plan for every step from manuscript to published book and enjoy the moment your book is finished.

Is a Cheap Memoir Ghostwriter Worth It?

Could you find someone who’ll write a full-length memoir for $5,000? Maybe. But you’re likely paying for a book written quickly by someone who hasn’t spent enough time with you to understand your story. Some low-cost services lean heavily on AI, and the result tends to sound generic. A memoir lives or dies by its voice, and your voice is what a robot can’t copy.

If the full cost of a ghostwriter isn’t in your budget right now, that’s okay. I’d much rather see you start smaller with the right help than spend less on a book that doesn’t sound like you.

Not Ready to Hire a Memoir Ghostwriter? Start With an Outline

If you’re still deciding whether to write your memoir yourself or hand it over, the Outline Intensive is a great place to start. Before we meet, you’ll fill out a prep workbook. Then we spend two hours on your story. I build your outline behind the scenes, and then we spend two more hours walking through it chapter by chapter.

You’ll leave with a detailed, chapter-by-chapter blueprint of your book, and a much clearer sense of whether you want to write it or hand it over. The Outline Intensive starts at $2,500, with a three-payment option. And the best part? If you decide to work with me on ghostwriting or book coaching within 90 days, I’ll credit what you paid toward your project.
